Congratulations, mama-to-be! You're literally building a tiny human in there - you're kind of a rock star.
You're about to embark on an enchanting journey - capturing the radiant glow of your pregnancy in a maternity photoshoot. It's time to embrace your beautiful bump and create lasting memories that will make you smile for years to come. To make sure you're fully prepared for this magical experience, we've compiled the top 10 fun and fabulous ways to get ready for your maternity session. So, let's dive in and make this photoshoot an unforgettable adventure!
Once you determine that you'd like to have a maternity session, start by researching local photographers that you love and learn more about the services that they offer. For example, some people only do maternity sessions in a studio setting, while some do maternity sessions on location - some offer both! Think about the look you're going for, and that will help you pick the right photographer for you. Try to aim to have your session booked about 8 weeks in advance to be sure to secure a session with the photographer that best suits your aesthetic.
You should aim to have your session between 28 and 32 weeks - your bump will be showing and will look great in photos, but you'll still be fairly mobile and be able to pose comfortably. You can have your session later in your pregnancy, but posing, walking, and standing for longer periods of time may become more challenging.
Indulge in some well-deserved self-care before your session. Get a relaxing prenatal massage, have your hair and makeup done professionally, or enjoy a soothing bubble bath. When you feel pampered and refreshed, it will radiate through the camera lens.
Practice all of the self care leading up to your session. That means a restful night's sleep (I know, I know, easier said than done... but try!), keeping up on your hydration, and making sure to eat. Sometimes nerves (or morning sickness) can make all of this challenging, but do your best and nibble on snacks as needed.
Maternity sessions can be a great opportunity to incorporate some precious mementos into your photos. Here are a few ideas:
- Your sonogram
- Baby blankets or clothing
- Cute little baby shoes
- baby blocks or letters
- Heirloom items
Or get creative and come up with a fun theme or concept! (At some point I want to do a maternity session where someone is attempting to assemble a baby item and mama is reading the directions and pointing out different steps. Also, if anyone wants to do a Disney inspired maternity session please call me ASAP.)
Also to consider: You may opt to bring a support person with you, but make sure they'll be more of a help and less of a distraction.
Depending on the look you're going for, outfits can range from a cute top and a pair of jeans all the way up to a flowy, dramatic maternity dress (or anything in between... possibly both?). The important thing here is to find an outfit that is comfortable and not restrictive or limiting to your movement.
If you're not sure of a look or would like suggestions or access to our client closet, all you need to do is ask! There's also a ton of rental options available which gives you access to some dramatic looks without the dramatic budget.
Also, skip clothing or accessories with elastics, for at least an hour before your session, as they can leave marks on the skin.
This is a scenario in which neutral is definitely best. Your best bet is to opt for something smooth or seamless in nude, black, or white. With that in mind, consider what you'll be wearing - for example if you've selected a white off the shoulder dress, you probably wouldn't want to wear a black racerback bra. Also, it's ok to bring different undergarments for different looks, we promise we won't be mad if you change!
From there? Relax, trust your photographer, and embrace every gorgeous curve.
