Elopement Inspiration: Downtown GSO Styled Shoot

Some people are just born to be rockstars!

Earlier this year, we participated in a styled elopement created by Elope NC, one of North Carolina's best sources for all things Elopement! We like experimenting with different aesthetics, and it’s always fun to do something a little more edgy than the traditional wedding stuff. The rock and roll vibe really resonated for us based on our own personal style. The design concept and style choices definitely educated posing – there were certain items like the cake pops, jewelry, and outfits that were literally begging to be featured. This was such a fun elopement idea, especially for people like us who love video games and good music!

We started the day at The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro in the early afternoon. Each room was uniquely styled, with different colored walls in each space, providing tons of photo opportunities. Originally constructed in 1889, the facility, which continues its role in the community as a place for weddings, celebrations, and other formal gatherings and events, as well as a gorgeous bed & breakfast (click here to book your stay!). If you're into the history, you can read more about this amazing space here.

At the Historic Magnolia House, the hair and makeup artists of Updo's Studio enjoyed ample natural light while styling our model bride with a glam fauxhawk updo and a signature makeup look combining dramatic eyes and deep red lips. Her look was further accented by a hairpiece with black flowers and a mini birdcage veil, provided by The Magnolia Bride. The dress shop also provided a stunning black dress for our model, which showcased a full tulle skirt with black polka dots, off-the-shoulder puffy sleeves, a fitted waist, and a sweetheart neckline. Our model groom was dressed in a luxurious Chase charcoal paisley tuxedo with a black shirt from Bernard’s Formalwear.

Not only were their outfits dramatic, but the jewelry selected for this shoot featured the bold red January garnet birthstone (provided by Diamonds Direct). The large garnet engagement ring had a matching necklace and earrings that were the perfect complement for the bold and beautiful look.

With our couple dressed and ready, we took the opportunity to explore Downtown Greensboro in the area surrounding our ceremony and reception venue before heading back to BoxCar Bar + Arcade to play in the arcade, enjoy a beer, and hang out until ceremony time. The venue features a brand new 4,400 square foot private event space and a private courtyard, where the ceremony was set up and featured a stunning architectural floral backdrop by Power Petals.

On top of the ceremony backdrop was a custom made neon sign by Durham-based Hex Neon. It's real neon and can last for up to 30 years, making it a great statement piece of home decor after the wedding. A black and dark brown leather rug from The Studio by Tiger completed the ceremony setting, and officiant Magical Weddings by Carly brought their joyful energy to the scene.

As a January elopement, we were aware that the winter weather in North Carolina can be unpredictable - but we were prepared! In addition to the private outdoor courtyard, BoxCar also has a large indoor event space that features a dramatic door that’s perfect for a ceremony backdrop. We are firm believers that it is always important to have a plan B, whatever that may look like – backup indoor options are always a plus. Also, this is one of those moments where an awesome planner can really save the day, as chances are they have seen most everything and will have great ideas to keep to your vision while keeping everyone safe & dry.

Inside BoxCar’s event space, Partners in Planning created a superb sweetheart table in front of the large, ornate wooden doors (a feature remaining from the original building). The sweetheart table featured gold edged square mirrors in place of traditional chargers, black plates and flatware, a charcoal gray napkin, and a clear drinking goblet with black stem. The centerpiece included more long-stemmed flowers from Power Petals, and under the table, a charcoal gray leather rug and lanterns were set out. Two white and black guitars on either side of the table completed the look. The long built-in bar was decorated with candles, greenery, and wine bottles with custom labels, provided by Carla of Partners in Planning.

A dessert table was set out nearby, featuring an assortment of cake pops and dessert shooters by Main Street Cake in a variety of flavors. Not only beautiful, but tasty and fun, too! The dessert table was also decorated by a keepsake frame by Revelry + Heart, which included dried floral components, two black skeletons, and the words "'Til Death," as well as the couple's name and wedding date.

We wrapped up the evening with a short set from Greensboro-based Southern rock band Chuck Mountain, which was the perfect way to end the festivities. This three-piece band definitely gave the couple a memorable first dance experience and brought our collective rock and roll dreams to life.
