Choosing the Right Location for your Session

Engagement, Bridal, & Family Portraits are Beautiful...

but how do you pick the perfect place?

There are tons of great options in the triad and beyond for portrait sessions - from in studio to on the town, here are a few ideas to help you select the right location for your portrait session.

1) Someplace Meaningful to You

A favorite activity, a beloved restaurant, or the place where you first met - choosing a location that has special significance to you makes the images captured there that much sweeter. The best portraits aren't just pictures of a person, they tell a little bit about them, too.

2) Gardens and Parks and Arboretums (Oh My!)

North Carolina is home to tons of beautiful views, sweeping landscapes, and beautiful park backdrops, so these are always a great option. Depending on the outdoor space you choose, there are endless beautiful features to take advantage of from seasonal flowers to statement structures. Something to keep in mind when selecting a park for your photo session - many require permits that must be obtained in advance! Talk to your photographer about the locations you are considering and to help you figure out what (if any) paperwork is required.

3) In-Studio Portraits

Sometimes an in-studio session is your best bet - for those rainy, too cold, or too hot days, an indoor studio setting protects you from the elements and still allows for beautiful, clean and classic portraits.

4) Try Something Adventurous!

Breathtaking landscapes atop mountains. Standing in the crashing waves of the Outer Banks. Locations like these can require a bit more effort, so make sure it's manageable for you (and your photographer, with equipment). Make sure you carefully research any adventurous locations you may want to attempt, and remember to dress accordingly!

5) Try a Walk on the Town!

Visit your nearest city for a downtown photoshoot! Stroll the city streets and let the beautiful lighting, architecture, and urban landscape provide the perfect backdrop for your session. Depending on how you style it, a city session can be edgy and urban or classic and elegant (or anything in between)!

6) Cozy, At-Home Portraits

There's something incredibly private and personal about doing portraits in the home, in your own space. For starters, you can truly relax and be yourself at home, and it gives you the chance to create and capture your life as it happens - raw, unique, intimate.

7) Look to Your Photographer for Inspiration!

It's okay if you're not sure where you want to do your portraits, and your photographer can be an amazing resource for ideas! Discuss the overall "look" you're going for (casual, formal, dreamy, sunset, etc.) and leave it to the professional to come up with some options for your session.
